# place.photo > place.photo is a free placeholder image service for realistic, AI-generated portraits of adults. The URL is the > whole API: gender, age, hair and face tags, then the size (any width and height from 1 to 1024 pixels). No API > key, no sign-up. Made by webdave (https://webdave.app). Every person on place.photo is AI-generated and does not exist. Images are reviewed by a person before they are added. The full rules, every synonym, the fallback order and the response headers are in https://place.photo/llms-full.txt. URL format: `https://place.photo/[category/][gender/][age/][tags/...][seed/][transparent/]`. Parts go in any order; only the size is fixed (always last) and required. - Size: `512` for 512 × 512, or `512x300` for width × height, each side 1 to 1024. Anything else there returns HTTP 400. - Gender: `man` or `woman`; without one you get an even mix of men and women. - Age: any other number, rounded to the nearest ten and kept within 20 to 90; or a range like `30-50`. - Tags: hair colour `black`, `brown`, `blonde`, `red`, `grey`, `white`; hair `bald`, `short`, `long`, `curly`; face `glasses`, `beard`, `smiling`, `neutral`; clothing `business`, `casual`. Common synonyms work (`male`, `gray`, `blond`, `smile`, `suit`, ...). - Seed: `s1`, `s2`, ... give different people in order; `seed-` gives one stable person per word (e.g. a user id). - `transparent`: a transparent WebP instead of the image's studio backdrop colour. - Size and background do not change the person. Unknown words are ignored; there are no query parameters. - When nothing matches every tag, tags are dropped one at a time (gender never) and the `X-Dropped` header names them. Examples: `https://place.photo/200`, `https://place.photo/man/bald/512`, `https://place.photo/woman/60/glasses/256`, `https://place.photo/woman/30-50/256`, `https://place.photo/man/s3/128`, `https://place.photo/seed-alice/64`, `https://place.photo/woman/transparent/256`. Free for designs, prototypes, tests, sites and apps, commercial ones included. Do not present a face as a real, identifiable person; no bulk downloading, redistributing as a collection or dataset, or AI training; keep the AI-generated label. ## Docs - [Full documentation for LLMs](https://place.photo/llms-full.txt): every URL rule, synonym, example, the fallback order and response headers - [URL format](https://place.photo/#url): how a URL is built, with a live example - [Tags, ages and sizes](https://place.photo/#tags): every tag with a face that has it - [Use it](https://place.photo/#use): HTML, CSS, Markdown and code snippets - [FAQ](https://place.photo/#faq): common questions - [Terms of use](https://place.photo/#terms): what is and is not allowed - [Report an image](https://place.photo/#report): an image that looks like a real person is removed for good (report@place.photo) ## Optional - [webdave](https://webdave.app): the maker
